A company called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbc.com\/\">SBC Intellectual Property<\/a> is claiming to have a US&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/patft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=\/netahtml\/search-bool.html&amp;r=10&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND%0A%0A&amp;d=ptxt&amp;s1=5,933,841&amp;OS=5,933,841&amp;RS=5,933,841\">patent<\/a>&nbsp;covering the concept of&nbsp;navigation bars (like the one on the left-side of this page) in web sites. Now they&#8217;ve started&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.museumtour.com\/sbc.html\">demanding<\/a> licence fees from&nbsp;small&nbsp;e-commerce sites. The patent seems very broad and un-innovative to me. Hopefully, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legal500.com\/devs\/uk\/it\/ukit_097.htm\">BT&#8217;s attempt to patent hyperlinks<\/a>, it&#8217;ll be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siliconvalley.com\/mld\/siliconvalley\/business\/columnists\/dan_gillmor\/ejournal\/3924560.htm\">struck-down<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Related madness: RIM are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/ac2\/wp-dyn?pagename=article&amp;node=&amp;contentId=A23914-2002Nov21&amp;notFound=true\">sued<\/a> for transmitting emails over wireless networks. And Palm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brighthand.com\/article\/Graffiti_Dead\">go down<\/a> to Xerox over its graffiti.&nbsp;So lets get this straight &#8211; the idea of writing in a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/patft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=\/netahtml\/search-bool.html&amp;r=4&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=ptxt&amp;s1=unistrokes&amp;OS=unistrokes&amp;RS=unistrokes\">single, unbroken stroke<\/a>&#8221; is&nbsp;new and innovative is it?  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yikes!
