I was up in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lake-district.gov.uk\/\">Lake District<\/a> on a short pre-war backpacking trip. It rained almost continuously every day except Friday, which was warm and sunny with a completely cloudless blue sky. It was also the day I had to travel home. Still, an enjoyable and strenuous week. Photos should appear in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewjohnson.me.uk\/ViewCollection.aspx\">photos area<\/a> soon. # <\/p>\n<p>I spent the evenings simultaneously trying not to worry about the coming war, and re-reading a battered old copy of <em>1984<\/em>. Consequently, I now have a solid grounding in the principles of doublethink. # <\/p>\n<p>Some reading material to pass the time before the 24 hour rolling coverage starts:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/comment\/story\/0,3604,914636,00.html\">Farewell to the old world<\/a>&nbsp;(Guardian). &#8220;<em>Momentous events and decisions, each weighty in its own terms, are tripping over each other. There is a sense of history suddenly speeding up, of a loss of control&#8230;<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.independent.co.uk\/world\/politics\/story.jsp?story=387592\">The war of misinformation has begun<\/a>, by Robert Fisk (Independent).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newamericancentury.org\/statementofprinciples.htm\">Project for the New American Century: Statement of Principles<\/a>. Double-plus-scary. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/03\/14\/opinion\/14KRUG.html?ex=1048670328&amp;ei=1&amp;en=d431d98d1c138f6e\">George W.
