Road Mending

Stripped of the need to think or judge or defer.
Just a dirt track and rocks and grass.

And a sky offering no judgement at all.
And a back bent like the pick and the shovel.

Lever out the rock and place it just so
in that gap in the wall.

Think of the hands that did this before you.
Of all the feet that ever walked this way.

Of that rock still being there, in that wall,
when you are gone and dust.

Learn to see the humanity in that.
